GoneCarlo Stanton: What would it take for every team to bring him in?
Giancarlo Stanton is among the best right fielders in baseball if not the best. For some reason (probably the 295 million dollar contract of which he is worth every penny), Derek Jeter wants to blow up the Marlins and clean house, starting with Giancarlo. He even wants to get rid of the wonderful piece of artwork in center field. In this article, we will present trade offers from every team in baseball in what we think could convince Jeter to send a proven All Star else ware.
Bracton #1
1. Toronto Blue Jays- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr (#1 in Blue Jays farm system, #3 in MLB Top 100), 1B Rowdy Tellez (#12 in Blue Jays fam system), P Marcus Stroman, 2B Ryan Goins, Cash Considerations
Explanation= Toronto has arguably one of the best farm systems in baseball and have great positioning to sway Jeter in this deal (that is if Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins have their big boy pants on that day). Guerrero will be a star in this league eventually and Tellez looked like he could have made the team last spring. Stroman will immediately be the ace of their group and provide prominent pitching once more after the death of Jose Fernandez (rest his soul). Goins could potentially be the team’s next second baseman if they do decide to trade Dee Gordon to continue to improve their farm system. In Toronto’s case they get a proven star to pair with the already dangerous group of hitters in the franchise. This deal makes the most sense for Miami and should be the way to go.
Bracton #2
2. Baltimore Orioles- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 2B Jonathan Schoop, CL Zach Britton, 1B Trey Mancini, C Chance Sisco (#1 in Orioles farm system, #42 in MLB Top 100), Cash Considerations
Explanation- This trade gives Miami a talented 2B to replace Dee Gordon with if they do decide to trade him. Britton is possibly the best closer in baseball when healthy, and with the emergence of Brad Brach, the Orioles can afford to trade him. Mancini played well this season as a rookie and could give Miami a stable 1B group of Justin Bour and Mancini for the next few years. Lastly, Sisco could develop into a starting sport which the Marlins could somewhat use. In Baltimore’s case Stanton, Trumbo, and Machado could cause some trouble if this happens.
Bracton #3
3. Cleveland Indians- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- LF Michael Brantley, C Francisco Mejia (#1 in Indians farm system, #13 in MLB Top 100), P Josh Tomlin, CF Tyler Naquin, Cash Considerations
Explanation- This is certainly a good trade, if the Marlins are looking to perform an accelerated rebuild. This would give them a solid left fielder in Brantley, a young stud center fielder in Naquin, a solid pitcher in Tomlin, and a potential star catcher in Mejia. If Cleveland was to retain Stanton’s full salary, I’m sure Jeter would be all over this deal. Meanwhile Cleveland gets another power hitter to pair with Encarnacion, Lindor, and José Ramírez.
Bracton #4
4. San Francisco Giants- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 3B Christian Arroyo (56th in MLB Top 100, #1 in SF farm system), OF Chris Shaw (#2 in SF farm system), 1B Brandon Belt, SS Brandon Crawford, Cash Considerations
Explanation- Even though San Francisco is supposed to be one of the more aggressive teams in the Stanton sweepstakes, I just don’t see how they could come up with a deal that is as overwhelming as Derek Jeter and the Marlins may want. There is a reason why they finished last in their division last year, because most of the star players on the team are 30+ years old at the tail end of their careers (Hunter Pence, Hunter Strickland, Matt Cain, Mark Melancon, Denard Span, Jeff Samardzija, and Pablo Sandoval). Stanton would bring this team relevance again and create a solid big 3 of Bumgarner, Stanton, and Buster Posey. That team wouldn’t finish in last place. However if I’m the Marlins I decline this trade even though that is probably the best that SF could offer.
Bracton #5
5. Arizona Diamondbacks- RF Giancarlo Stanton, OF Thomas Jones (#13 in MIA farm)
Miami Marlins- 1B Pavin Smith (#1 in ARI farm #62 on MLB Top 100), RHP John Duplantier (#2 in ARI Farm #95 on MLB Top 100), P Patrick Corbin, CF AJ Pollock
Explanation- Arizona has the assets to get this deal done if they want too. They have to do something major in order to keep up with the reigning pennant champions LA Dodgers. Hell, they were 11 games out of first place with 93 wins. This trade gives Arizona the Dodgers ability to go deep every at bat. A combination of Paul Goldschmidt, possibly JD Martinez, Jake Lamb, and Giancarlo Stanton. That’s pretty good to me. Meanwhile the Marlins get a rising star (who I watched bring the first CWS championship to good old UVA) in Pavin Smith, a star CF, when healthy in AJ Pollock, A solid pitcher in Patrick Corbin, and a young pitcher with some upside. I think this is a fair deal for both sides.
Bracton #6
6. Colorado Rockies- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- CF Charlie Blackmon, SS Brendan Rodgers (#6 on MLB Top 100, #1 in COL farm), 1B Ryan McMahon (#2 in COL farm, #55 on MLB Top 100), P Mike Dunn, Cash Considerations
Explanation- Again, this team finished with 87 wins and was 17 games out of first place. This team might need to make a splash if they don’t want to finish 3rd next year with a talented team. They need to use these valuable years of Nolan Arenado’s prime to their advantage and get good quick. Trading Blackmon is a certainty at this point. They were about to trade him to Toronto last winter for Marcus Stroman, however that deal fell apart. They give up Brendan Rodgers, who really wasn’t going to play a major role on the team as long as Trevor Story is around. With the emergence of Mark Reynolds, McMahon seems expendable and I could see them trading Dunn just to give Miami a decent pitcher that they desperately need. Following this, Colorado’s outfield would have Carlos Gonzalez in Left Field and Giancarlo Stanton in Right Field, still having Arenado and Reynolds hitting in the same lineup. That could be a deadly combination if this trade happens.
Bracton #7
7. Los Angeles Dodgers- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- CF Joc Pederson, RHP Walker Buehler (#10 on MLB Top 100 #1 in LAD farm), RHP Yadier Alvarez (#45 on MLB Top 100 #3 in LAD Farm), C Keibert Ruiz (#100 on MLB Top 100 #6 in LAD farm), P Scott Kazmir
Explanation If the Dodgers make this deal, their outfield would be Bellinger, Puig, and Stanton (push Puig to center). That combination may be the best outfield in baseball for years to come. Jeter’s goal was to make the Marlins younger and this trade makes so much sense in that respect. Joc Pederson is coming off a great playoff run and could be a leader on the Marlins next season in a full time role. The prospects deepen Miami’s farm system (who’s highest prospect isn’t even in the Top 100). Meanwhile, the Dodgers after this trade would still be the favorites in the NL and potentially even WS favorites if this was to happen. They certainly wouldn’t lose in 7 games with that team.
Bracton #8
8. San Diego Padres- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 1B Wil Myers, RP Brad Hand, LHP Mackenzie Gore (#24 on MLB Top 100, #1 in SD farm), 2B Luis Urias (#48 Top 100, #3 in SD farm)
Explanation- Let’s just get this straight. San Diego will NEVER get Giancarlo Stanton unless they are willing to part with Wil Myers. SD was trying to trade Brad Hand anyway after an All-Star appearance and these prospects could have some upside. This team wouldn’t really have any sense of direction if they were to aggressively pursue Stanton, which is why I can safely say that Stanton will not be a member of the San Diego Padres next season. However, for the purpose of this article, I had to present an offer from them. Here it is. SD would vastly overpay, and even with Stanton’s services, they would probably finish near the bottom again after this deal.
Bracton #9
9. Chicago White Sox- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Avisail Garcia, OF Eloy Jimenez (#4 in Top 100, #1 in farm), RHP Michael Kopeck (#9 in Top 100, #2 in the farm), P Derek Holland
Explanation- Derek Jeter preaches about how much he wants to acquire young talent in a potential Stanton trade. This is a very good example of that. Two prospects in the Top 10 head to Miami when they don’t have a prospect in the Top 100 to start. They also get a promising young outfielder in Avisail Garcia and a solid pitcher (which they need) in Derek Holland. Chicago has the assets to pull off this trade if they want too. However, they would be going against the selling culture of the past few years which they have been working very hard to execute (Chris Sale, David Robertson, Todd Frazier, Jose Quintana, ect).
Bracton #10
10. Seattle Mariners- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- P Felix Hernandez, RF Mitch Haniger, OF Kyle Lewis (#46 Top 100, #1 in SEA farm), RHP Nick Neidert (#2 in SEA farm), 3B Joe Rizzo (#12 in SEA farm)
Explanation- This trade fills current needs for Miami more than future. Felix Hernandez has been struggling over the past few seasons and could be looking at a bounce-back year with a change of scenery. Mitch Haniger was one of the more promising rookies last season until an unfortunate injury caused him to miss the majority of the remaining part of the season. Lewis, Neidert, and Rizzo have upside and would help the Marlins farm system. Meanwhile Seattle now has Stanton, Nelson Cruz, Cano, and Jean Segura. Not bad at all.
Bracton #11
11. New York Mets- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- P Steven Matz, LF Michael Conforto, LHP David Peterson (#1 in Mets farm), Ahmad Rosario
Explanation- I think the Mets have the young talent Jeter and his group are looking for, however I personally believe the Marlins won’t trade Stanton to a divisional rival. Matz and Conforto have to be included for a deal to get done in my opinion, and Rosario is capable of being a great player in the league at some point.
Bracton #12
12. Pittsburgh Pirates- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- CF Starling Marte , P Tyler Glasnow, OF Austin Meadows (#16 in MLB Top 100, #1 in PIT farm), RHP Mitch Keller (#18 in MLB Top 100, #2 in PIT farm), John Jaso, Cash Considerations
Explanation- The Pirates are in need of a superstar to pair with Andrew McCutchen in the outfield. Stanton would be a good fit. The Pirates would give up Marte because of his awful season last year (issues on and off the field). The prospects in return are the youth Miami is looking for in the deal and they get a veteran in John Jaso. I don’t think a Stanton deal gets done involving Pittsburgh however, unless it is more than the offer presented.
Bracton #13
13. Atlanta Braves-RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- SS Dansby Swanson, OF Ronald Acuna (#5 in MLB Top 100, #1 in the ATL farm), LHP Kolby Allard (#21 in MLB Top 100 #2 in ATL farm), P Julio Tehran
Explanation- The Braves are in need of a marketing superstar and Stanton is certainly that. The young talent is there to please Jeter and his group, and new Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos put his name back on the map as a GM who isn’t afraid to make a splash. This is the same guy who traded for Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki, and David Price. However, he will need to find a way to convince Jeter that trading Stanton to a division rival is a good idea. Good luck Alex!
Bracton #14
14. Houston Astros- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 3B Alex Bregman, OF Kyle Tucker (#7 in MLB Top 100, #1 in HOU farm), RHP J.B. Bukauskas (#74 in MLB Top 100, #3 in HOU farm), P Luke Gregerson
Explanation- I highly doubt that the reigning World Series Champions will make a deal of this magnitude following a championship. However, you never know. I don’t think this deal will happen but I’m sure Jeter would want Bregman involved if there was going to be one.
Jay #1
1. Boston Red Sox- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- LF Jackie Bradley Jr, LHP Brian Johnson (#13 in Red Sox farm system), 3B Michael Chavis (#2 in Red Sox farm system, #92 in MLB Top 100 prospects), INF Tzu-Wei Lin (#22 in Red Sox Farm system), Cash Considerations
Explanation= Jackie Bradley Jr is young and has the potential to be almost as good a hitter as Stanton. Both INF prospects would help make their farm system better. Also, if they do clear house and trade Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna, their farm system could continue to improve. As for Brian Johnson, this team needs pitchers more than anything and getting a guy with some MLB experience wouldn’t hurt.
Jay #2
2. New York Yankees- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins-CF Aaron Hicks, OF Clint Frazier, 1B Greg Bird, RHP Chance Adams (#2 in Yankees farm system (#52 on MLB Top 100), Yankees International Signing Spot
Explanation- This trade gives the Marlins more young players to build their team around. Clint Frazier and Aaron Hicks have shown at a young age that they can develop into promising talents in the MLB for years to come. The International Signing Spot gives the Marlins another chance to get the “Japanese Babe Ruth”, Shohei Otani if they want too. Adams, while not a flashy name, can still possibly become a solid MLB pitcher which the Marlins desperately could use. Lastly, while many people don’t think Greg Bird is going to amount to much in the MLB (Bracton included), I personally think, at the very least, he could become a decent HR hitter at 1B for years to come.
Jay #3
3. Tampa Bay Rays- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Kevin Kiermaier, RHP Jose De Leon (#6 Rays Prospect, #83 overall on top 100 list) LHP Blake Snell, 1B/LHP Brendan McKay (#3 Rays prospect, #19 overall on top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- Derek Jeter is not going to make a trade to get players who don’t have much potential or talent. This deal gives the Marlins exactly what they need to start the impending rebuild. Kevin Kiermaier is prone to injury and is inconsistent at the plate, but his exceptional fielding ability and his overall talent would provide a nice spark to an inconsistent offense. Also, Blake Snell and Jose De Leon are two promising pitching prospects that have both shown flashes of greatness. If they can stay healthy, then they could develop into nice members of a weak Marlins rotation. Even though Miami is losing an MVP candidate in Giancarlo Stanton, this trade provides more than enough return to make up for his absence.
Jay #4
4. Minnesota Twins- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Max Kepler, RHP Ervin Santana, LHP Tyler Jay (#8 Twins Prospect, N/A on top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- While this looks like the Twins are giving up a lot at first, it’s actually a pretty even deal. Max Kepler would provide Miami with a replacement for Stanton that could end up developing into a solid player in a year or two. Ervin Santana is about to turn 35, but a veteran coming off a solid season would provide the #1 option that the Marlins’ rotation needs desperately. Meanwhile, Tyler Jay could end up becoming a valuable member of Miami’s rotation in a couple of years if he continues his trend of impressing his team’s scouts.
Jay #5
5. Detroit Tigers- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 1B Miguel Cabrera, RHP Jordan Zimmerman, RHP Franklin Perez (#1 Tigers Prospect, #40 overall on the top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- This would be a blockbuster deal to say the least. Miguel Cabrera is still a force at the plate, but his age has started to show in recent years. That being said, his leadership would help a young Marlins team develop while providing a bat to replace Stanton. Also, Jordan Zimmerman could possibly be a good asset for Miami to acquire if he returns to the level he played at with Washington. Finally, the Marlins would be getting Franklin Perez, who is an exciting pitching prospect. No matter where Perez is when he’s ready for the MLB, he will certainly be a solid pitcher for years to come, and Miami desperately needs to add some talent at that position.
Jay #6
6. Kansas City Royals- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- LHP Danny Duffy, OF Alex Gordon, 3B/OF Hunter Dozier (#3 Royals prospect, N/A on the top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- with the Royals potentially losing three of their four best players, it might be time to clean house and rebuild around one or two superstars. This deal would allow them to do just that. On Miami’s end, this also makes a lot of sense. Danny Duffy could very well be a top option on Miami’s weak pitching rotation. Alex Gordon is getting older, but he still is a good hitter and is a sufficient replacement in the short term for Stanton. Finally, Hunter Dozier has looked good in the minor league as of late, and the Marlins could definitely build around him in the future if he continues to develop. From one rebuilding team to another, this deal makes worlds of sense for both sides.
Jay #7
7. Los Angeles Angels- Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- LHP Tyler Skaggs, OF Kole Kalhoun, RHP Griffin Canning (#4 Angels prospect, N/A on the top 100 list), 1B Matt Thaiss (#3 Angels prospect, N/A on the top 100 list),Cash considerations
Explanation- Imagine how deadly the Angels’ outfield would be with Mike Trout, Justin Upton, and Giancarlo Stanton. This trade offer could potentially be enough to make that dream a reality. Tyler Skaggs is an immediate upgrade to Miami’s pitching corps, while Griffin Canning is a promising prospect that could contribute a couple years down the line. Kole Kalhoun is not amazing, but he’s a solid replacement for Stanton that brings decent defense and hitting to the table. Also, Matt Thaiss could be an upgrade at first base down the line, which is something that the Marlins might need if they end up moving on from Justin Bour in this massive rebuild.
Jay #8
8. Texas Rangers- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Delino DeShields, 2B/OF Willie Calhoun (#2 Rangers prospect, #59 overall on the top 100 list), LHP Cole Hamels, 3B Joey Gallo, The Rangers’ international signing spot, Cash considerations
Explanation- This is the best the Rangers could offer from a limited group of prospects and an aging team. Cole Hamels is in his mid-30s, but his veteran leadership and pitching ability would help Miami in a large way. Delino DeShields just enjoyed a break out year, and he’s still young enough to continue to see improvement for years to come. Joey Gallo is an all or nothing hitter, but his ungodly power could help to replace Stanton’s bat in an otherwise power-lacking lineup. Finally, Willie Calhoun has shown that he can be something special in the MLB, and the Marlins could use someone as versatile as he is as they have virtually no utility players.
Jay #9
9. Oakland Athletics- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Khris Davis, OF Dustin Fowler, SS/OF Jorge Mateo (#4 Athletics prospect, #97 overall on the top 100 list), LHP A.J. Puk (#2 Athletics prospect, #34 overall on the top 100 list), The Athletics’ international signing spot, Cash considerations
Explanation- Let’s face it, the Athletics have one of the most talentless systems in all of baseball in both the minor league and the MLB team. This deal takes the most promising players from the whole franchise and gives them to Miami for a superstar, which Oakland so desperately needs. Khris Davis is a sure fire bet to hit 30+ home runs each season, and a presense like his could soften the blow of losing a bat like Stanton’s. Dustin Fowler is more of a long term development, but his limited time in the MLB showed promise. Jorge Mateo is going to be something special in the majors, and Derek Jeter would love to get his hands on a young player with his kind of talent. Finally, A.J. Puk is a solid pitching prospect that Miami could definitely use anchoring their rotation in a year or two.
Jay #10
10. Washington Nationals- RF Giancarlo Stanton, 2B Dee Gordon
Miami Marlins- OF Bryce Harper, 2B Daniel Murphy, RHP Tanner Roark, Cash considerations
Explanation- This deal is assuming that the Marlins are trading away both Stanton and 2B Dee Gordon. The reason this makes sense is because of consistency and age. Miami wants players who are younger and have a lot of talent, and Harper is just that, as he is younger than Stanton. Daniel Murphy, while aging, is arguably the most consistent hitter in baseball, hitting for one of the best averages every year. Tanner Roark would easily be the number one option on a very weak rotation, and Washington can afford to deal him.
Jay #11
11. Philadelphia Phillies- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- 3B Maikel Franco, OF Odubel Herrera, RHP Jerad Eickhoff, OF Mickey Moniak (#1 Phillies prospect, #28 overall on the top 100 list), RHP Sixto Sanchez (#2 Phillies prospect, #46 overall on the top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- The Phillies need to put their big boy pants on if they want to land Giancarlo Stanton. Trading young talents Maikel Franco and Odubel Herrera would give Miami two promising players to develop and reap the benefits of having. Jerad Eickhoff is inconsistent, but anyone is an upgrade over most of Miami’s pitching rotation. Mickey Moniak is one of the best prospects in baseball, but he would need to be included in this deal if the Phillies were serious about trading for Stanton. Finally, Sixto Sanchez would be a nice pitching prospect that the Marlins could develop into a possible ace down the line.
Jay #12
12. Chicago Cubs- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- SS Addison Russell, RHP Carl Edwards Jr, OF Kyle Schwarber, RHP Jose Albertos (#2 Cubs prospect, N/A on the top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- If Derek Jeter wants young talent, then this offer should garner his interest. Addison Russell is finding himself as the odd man out in the Cubs’ infield with the emergence of Ian Happ, so he is expandable to Chicago. Carl Edward Jr. is an immediate upgrade to an average bullpen. Kyle Schwarber just had a down year, but you can bet that he will have a nice bounce back year in 2018. Finally, Jose Albertos is a nice pitching prospect that could end up becoming a decent starter in the MLB down the line, and we all know the Marlins could use some pitching.
Jay #13
13. St. Louis Cardinals- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- RHP Alex Reyes (#1 Cardinals prospect, #14 overall on the top 100 list), IF Matt Carpenter, C Yadier Molina, The Cardinals’ international signing spot, Cash considerations,
Explanation- While this looks like a lot of older proven talent coming from the Cardinals, Jeter would still consider this offer. Yadier Molina is still playing at a high level, and the Cubs could use someone like him to provide veteran leadership. Matt Carpenter is also older, but his solid production every year would be a boost to both Miami’s offense and defense. However, the main piece of this deal is Alex Reyes. He is going to be an ace in the MLB for sure, and the Marlins would be stupid to accept a trade for Giancarlo Stanton from St. Louis if Reyes wasn’t in it.
Jay #14
14. Milwaukee Brewers- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Ryan Braun, IF Jonathan Villar, RHP Brandon Woodruff (#4 Brewers prospect, #80 overall on the top 100 list), Cash considerations
Explanation- This deal makes a lot of sense for both sides. The Marlins would benefit from this because of three simple reasons. Ryan Braun would be a more than sufficient replacement for Stanton with both his bat and defense. Jonathan Villar is a nice role-player, and his above average defense and speed would allow the Marlins to have options on the base paths and in the every day lineup. Finally, Brandon Woodruff is a decent pitching prospect that could end up being a valuable asset down the line for Miami’s pitching rotation.
Jay #15
15. Cincinnati Reds- RF Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins- OF Billy Hamilton, 1B Joey Votto, SS Zack Cozart, Cash considerations
Explanation- The Reds only haves few players of value, and they would need to trade the best of them to get Giancarlo Stanton. Joey Votto is very old, but he is able to keep putting up MVP numbers every season, and he could provide short-term relief for Miami after they lose Stanton. Billy Hamilton is young, speedy, and plays great defense, but that’s about it. Nevertheless, Miami could potentially find a role for him in a rebuild as a leadoff hitter or even a starting center fielder. Finally, Zack Cozart was an all star in 2017, and baseball fans should expect him to make the roster again next year. Cozart is an above average player in most aspects of the game, and Miami could use him as a centerpiece for their impending rebuild.
Jay #16
16. Miami Marlins- RF Giancarlo Stanton (Why they should hold on to him)
Explanation- As much as Giancarlo Stanton is worth, the Marlins would be better off keeping him. Stanton has already expressed that he will not hesitate to deny a trade to certain teams, making a potential trade harder to pull off. Plus, Stanton is a perfect building piece for any franchise, and his contract ensures he won’t be going anywhere for quite some time. If Derek Jeter is serious about wanting to rebuild this team around young talent, then he should hold on to Stanton as the centerpiece of the franchise for years to come. Although his contract is one of the largest in MLB history, Stanton is worth every penny, and the Marlins would send themselves and their fans into years of misery if they traded away Stanton.
Predictions
Jay- Stays in Miami
Bracton- Goes to the Los Angeles Dodgers
